Belated welcome. What exactley are you looking for as far as a practice technique? There are several regiments that I have when I practice that focus on technique, but I'm not quite sure what you're asking for.

I take it you'd like to build strength, as you say you want to play faster. A good way to do this is to make sure you use all four fingers on the fretting hand. The first excercise for this would be...

e|-------------------------------------------------------------------1--2--3--4
B|-----------------------------------------------------1--2--3--4---------------
G|--------------------------------------1--2--3--4------------------------------
D|------------------------1--2--3--4--------------------------------------------
A|------------1--2--3--4--------------------------------------------------------
E|--1-2-3-4---------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a good one for strength and discipline. Its not hard to play but keep it very slow and even, then gradually increase speed but still keeping the notes clean and accurate. Get it down clean then try with distortion and make sure the notes are coming out nice and clear with no strings ringing out over the notes you are playing. And of course, play the whole thing backwards, starting on the high e string 4--3--2--1-- and so on returning to the low E. This is still one of my favourites and you can play it anywhere you like on the neck.

Now this next one is great for finger strength, disipline, timing and accuracy. Its ugly sounding but really does warm up your fretting hand. This again is one of my all time favourites...and again, play it anywhere you like!

e|----------------6---7---------------------------------8--7----------------------
B|-------------5---------6---------------------------7----------6-----------------
G|----------6---------------7---------------------8----------------7--------------
D|-------5---------------------6---------------7-----------------------6----------
A|----6---------------------------7---------8-----------------------------7-------
E|-5----------------------------------6--7------------------------------------6--5
1 2 1 2 1 2 3 2 3 2 3 2 3 4 3 4 3 4 3 2 3 2 3 2 1

The fingering leads into eachother. The very last note (5th fret low E string) is just the 1st note again. I just wrote it at the end to help see you'd done a full circle. The rule is that there is one finger per fret. For no reason should a finger leave its fret, its part of the discipline. I tabbed out what finger to use just to help see this better. I'm pretty sure its all right but you'll get the idea anyway.

So - the fingers are assigned...

1st finger - 5th fret
2nd finger - 6th fret
3rd finger - 7th fret
4th finger - 8th fret

Thats pleanty to keep you busy and to get your hands burning in muscle pain. But when it comes to going back to playing something you know well. It'll feel alot easier. And speed just comes from being able to play something easily. Practice both these excercises all the way up and down the fret, each time starting at the first fret, and see how far you can get all the way up until the hands are tired. And then later try to beat that record. Strength is one of the biggest roles in guitar playing, and these works are an excellent building block for this kind of thing. Let them inspire you to write your own excercises, too

Dan.

As for the 1234 finger exercise you can do variations of that also.

Try 1324 and back 4231
" 1423 " " 3241
