Question about VLX 91 5 way switch

I cut off all the wires to my 5 way switch. Here is a picture of it:

On my VLX91 there are little pieces of wire that are soldered to connect the different numbers. So one wire lays across space 1 and Space 2 to connect them.

*What the Heck* is that? I didn't see that on the wiring diagrams. Anyone know why this is? Should I take them off?
