I've been jammin' with the same guitarist for about 17 years now, and don't get me wrong...he's good, but check this out: He meets this guy on the job that claims he specializes in audio electronics. Since my buddy has been having major issues with his equipment (most of it is 10+ years old) he asks the guy to come over and take a look at it. He put some 1950's U.S. made tubes in his ADA, cleaned up his solid state effects processor, tinkered with the settings, ect., giving my guitarist probably the best sound I've heard him with in the 17 years we have played together. The guy really knew his stuff.

So, he then proceeds to go out to his van and unload his equipment Question We knew the guy was into electronics, but we didn't know he played. He brought the only two guitars he owns. Both of them he made by hand, from scratch. No template for them, no nothing. He just woke up one morning and decided he wanted to build a guitar. He went to a piano manufacturing company and bought some maple, he bought a few tools at an estate sale, and then dove right in and built these two insturments. They were both beautiful (in appearance and tone). He had a 4X12 Ampeg cab, an older ADA preamp (88, I think) that he had put some U.S. tubes from the 1930's in, and an ADA reverb effect. His head, get this, was an early 1940's radio that he gutted and used the enclosure to make a head out of, using the original tubes from the radio.

Then he plugged in. First off, the guy only knew one volume level. You gotta respect that. He warms up with Eruption, then some Randy, Sach, and Malmsteen. Note for note, bend for bend. This guy, straight up, was a shredder. Through out the night he played everone who has ever graced the cover of Guitar magazine. From Joe Walsh to Paul Gilbert, he played just like you were listening to the CD. Just an incredible set of chops. It was an awesome night. It's been a long time since jammin' with someone has gotten me this motivated to play out again. I don't know what will become of it, I think my buddy was a little intimidated by the way this guy could play, and to be honest I was too. I put the bass down about half way through the session and just listend to them cut heads. But man, to get both of these guys to work together would just make killer music. I'll keep you posted as things happen.
