Hey, what do you think?

In my opinion, speed picking is only useful as sweep picking, and for everything else I use alternate. But there some kind of things, like some chords that I prefer to play with alternate instead of sweep because you can remark the accents in every note, i.e.:

G-------------8-------------
D---------10----10--------
A------10-----------10----
E---8-------------------8-

D U D U D U D

This is some thing that like to do Steve Morse.

Even, I like Michael Romeo style, but I prefer Paul Gilbert or Petrucci because of alternate, that let you play in a more rhythmical way and heavier. With economy picking you got to play softer, and even you got to brake your wrist for making : D-U-D, D-U-D; is that D-D when changing the strings that seems so anti-natural for me.

Well, I have been playing for 4 years with Speed Picking, and 2 months ago I have returned to Alternate, and I have to say that I prefer it.

Like I said, picks - frets - and effects are for guitar players. Wink It's kinda of funny you posted this, though. My guitar player and I had a conversation about bass players using picks last weekend. The SOB has been trying to convert me for 15 years now. You'd figure he'd just give up... Rolling Eyes

Usually i play guitar. My brother is bass player. But i don't understand why is he playing with pick. I player guitar with pick, when you play bass it gives much more fun to play with fingers, I think Smile

Yes, is more interesting playing bass with fingers, but I don't think that you can't use a pick.

I've used a pick on a few songs here and there for the purpose of effect. It gives it a sharped tone, but other then 2 or 3 songs I've written I strictly use my fingers.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you here!
In fact, I wouldn't consider sweep picking as speed picking..
more of a Ritard/staccato picking if anything...

As for speed picking...
Hmmmf..
I usually blend speed picking with legato...

I think whatever applies to the music one is playing and that they are comfortable with a certain technique then that should be the priority...

Well, I think that is also important to consider which technique will
help you to get the sound you want, and not only which one is more
comfortable, but it will depend on which type of guitarist you want to be.
