OK, so last Wednesday, out of the blue, I get this phone call from an automotive manufacturing company wanting to interview me. I agreed, but didn't really think it would go anywhere. Well, I got the position. I am going to be heading up their technology dept. This not only includes PC's, servers, printers, fax machine, hubs, routers, ect, but I am also responsible for their bar coding equipment, communications, and robotics.

So let's start with the obvious first, robotics. Not a *Holy Censor, Batman* clue here, folks. Seen 'em in movies, but other then that I couldn't tell you a *Holy Censor, Batman* thing about them. And the killer is, the company knows this!

The company is open 24/7, which means the 14 hours a day I'm not at work, I will be on call. That blows.

I have a 30 minute down time limit. Due to the nature of the business, if the manufacturing line (the robots) or shipping are down for more then 30 minutes it will begin to cost the company $20K PER MINUTE. No pressure, though.

The position, for the level of responsibility, does not pay near what it should, but they are paying me more money then I've ever made, so I can't complain. I have a feeling my life just got real interesting.

Man, the nerves are more hyped up with each day. It's weird for me because I never get nervous about a job. Being a project consultant really helps out with interviewing (because you do it constantly) and starting a new job (because you're constantly changing companies). So this whole nervous thing is new to me.

what the hell?
Should I expect Bill Gates to call me and have me work in his refrigeration department, and have him pay me in dog bones?

this post confused me, if you couldn't tell.

OK, end of week one, and I'm loving it. I pulled 60 hours this week...I haven't done that since I was a chef, but it's an awesome thing. It's the first time in years I've been challenged by a job and I'm totaly getting off on it. The downside is that corp. monitors all internet traffic. So, even though I have a designated T1, I can't post here when I'm at work, or listen to streaming internet radio. Oh well, I guess I have to give up some perks going from being a consultant to having my own gig. Casual dress (blue jeans and a t-shirt), the lack of "political correctness" in the office, and a brand new IBM Thinkpad laptop make up for it. I'm going to be humping 60 - 70 hours a week for the next couple of months, so I wont be around much. I'll make sure to drop in on the weekends and say "Whazzz Up!!!". 'Til then, everyone take care.
